Get to know a derby skater is a regular series on milehighnerds.com where we sit down and have the athletes ladies answer several questions on our minds ranging from the ludicrous to the absurd. If you have a question or would like to suggest a derby skater for this feature, drop an e-mail to guyincognito@milehighnerds.com
Roller Doll Name: Gabrielle “Fonda Payne” Begeman
Current Team: Mile High Club & Bad Apples
Years in league: 2
Position: Pivot, Blocker, Jammer
Occupation: Environmental Scientist
Hometown: D-Town, born and raised baby!
Why did you join the Denver Roller Dolls?
I needed an outlet to allow extreme physical contact without needing money for bail, coupled with an entertaining family of crazy women with whom I can relate.
What was your most memorable moment on the track?
In a mix-up bout last year, I was acting as a blocker and our jammer, Abbey Rogue was coming through the pack, I tried to aid her by giving her a push, which ended up making her fall, so I grabbed her under her arms and lifted her up and tried to carry her back through the pack. Too funny as my “assistance” hindered our ability to score points, but on the fly we recuperated and ended up winning that game. (see picture below.)

What are the top three reasons why someone should be a Denver Roller Doll fan?
Roller derby is the fastest growing female sport, our travel team, the Mile High Club, is third in the nation and we love our fans!
What do you like to do when you are off the track?
You name it, I enjoy driving classic convertible cars, scavenging through piles of junk for treasure, pretending it’s Halloween, paddling boats down raging rivers, getting my fingernails dirty and doing the worm.
If you could be any character in fiction, who would you be and why?
A liger, only because they are the most majestic hybrid creatures.
What makes you angry?
Ridiculous rues that were meant to be broken.
At a Subway Restaurant Interview:
What’s the most important part of the sandwich?
THE MEAT, duh!
Why are manhole covers round?
Because most of the people who enter them are round.
