Why did you join the Denver Roller Dolls?
I had already been playing roller derby for a year with the Silicon Valley Roller Girls in San Jose, California, when I moved to Boulder, Colorado. I knew I wanted to continue playing roller derby.
I chose the Denver Roller Dolls because of their professionalism and athleticism. I originally started playing roller derby on a whim. I had gone roller skating for my birthday, and I was so hooked that I was looking at the websites of local rinks to see their hours. I saw an ad for roller derby, and I showed up to practice that night, and I haven’t looked back since.
What was your most memorable moment on the track?
At the 2009 DRD championship bout, a gentleman asked me for my autograph and said I was his favorite skater. I never had a fan before!
What are the top three reasons why someone should be a Denver Roller Doll fan?
1) Excitement: Roller derby is the most exciting sport out there, and you’re missing out if you’ve never seen it.
2) Diversity: Get to know each of us on a personal level, even just by reading our bios on the DRD website, and you’ll find that each Denver Roller Doll is unique. You’ll find students, teachers, aestheticians, engineers, doctors, even grandmas! And we have lovely personalities as well.
3) Empowerment: Sure, there are tons of female sports out there. But none of them combine athleticism, skill, strategy, grace, and DIY-business-savvy the way we do.
What do you like to do when you are off the track?
Solve problems at work as an electrical engineer, snack, cook, read, play Bananagrams, and of course think about roller derby!
What food could you eat every day for two weeks and not get sick of?
Raw oysters. Or watermelon.
If you could be any character in fiction, who would you be and why?
Anne of Green Gables. Her world was so idyllic. The night I had a dream that I lived in Avonlea was the happiest night of my childhood. I fruitlessly tried for years to recreate that dream.
Are you telling the truth if you lie in bed?
No, that’s how you preserve your relationships.
Do vegetarians eat animal crackers?
Yes, they bite off the heads first.
